The United Kingdom achieved its cleanest electricity production on record in 2024, as fossil fuel usage dropped to an all-time low while renewable energy sources reached unprecedented levels, according to a report by climate and energy platform Carbon Brief.

Renewable energy sources, including wind and solar, contributed an impressive 45% of the country’s electricity last year, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s green energy journey. Meanwhile, fossil fuels such as oil, gas, and coal accounted for only 29%, reflecting the steady decline in their usage. Nuclear energy played a substantial role, generating 13% of the nation’s electricity, while imports made up the remaining 11%.

In a landmark development, the UK became the first G7 nation to eliminate coal-fired electricity production following the closure of its last coal plant in October 2024. This achievement was bolstered by the Labour government’s November decision to ban the opening of new coal mines, cementing its commitment to a sustainable energy future.

Despite the growth in renewables, gas-fired power stations remained the largest single source of electricity in 2024. However, Carbon Brief forecasts that wind power is poised to surpass gas as the leading energy source in 2025, signaling continued progress in the country’s energy transition.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer reiterated the government’s pledge to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 81% from 1990 levels by 2035 as part of the country’s broader strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. This shift to clean energy not only addresses environmental concerns but also aims to combat high energy costs, which have persisted since the 2022 Russia-Ukraine conflict disrupted global markets.
