The Supreme Tribunal of Justice in Venezuela has imposed a $10 million fine on TikTok, citing negligence in curbing dangerous content on its platform. This decision comes in the wake of viral challenges that led to the deaths of three adolescents and the hospitalization of over 200 others due to chemical intoxication.

Justice Tania D’Amelio stated that TikTok failed to implement “necessary and adequate measures” to prevent harmful content from spreading. In addition to the fine, TikTok was ordered to establish a local office in Venezuela and given eight days to comply or face further action.

The fine will fund a “TikTok victims fund” aimed at addressing the psychological and emotional damage suffered by victims, especially minors. The company acknowledged the gravity of the matter, according to court documents.

President Nicolás Maduro had previously threatened severe consequences if TikTok did not remove content promoting what he called “criminal challenges.” Lawmakers in Venezuela are also working on legislation to regulate social media platforms amid concerns about their use to promote “hate” and “division.”

TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, has faced global criticism for failing to adequately moderate its content. The platform prohibits videos that encourage self-harm or suicide, but authorities argue it has not done enough to enforce these rules.
