The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has absolved Nigeria and the Super Eagles of any misconduct during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Super Eagles, under the leadership of head coach Austin Eguavoen, emerged as Group D leaders after dominating a group that included Libya, Benin, and Rwanda. CAF’s investigation into the qualifiers revealed no breaches by the Nigerian team or its players.
However, the CAF Disciplinary Board sanctioned Libya, Benin, and Equatorial Guinea for various infractions:
Libya: The Libyan Football Federation was fined $50,000 and ordered to play its next two home matches behind closed doors for violations of Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code. The charges stem from incidents involving fans and officials during their November 18, 2024, match against Benin in Benghazi.
Benin: The Beninese Football Federation was fined $5,000 for failing to cooperate with the CAF Disciplinary Board during their match against Rwanda. Additionally, a $50,000 fine was imposed for misconduct by officials, with $25,000 suspended.
Equatorial Guinea: The country was fined $5,000 for failing to provide adequate security during their November 14, 2024, match against Togo in Malabo, which resulted in a pitch invasion. They were also handed a suspended $25,000 fine for the security breach.
CAF disclosed the disciplinary decisions on its official website, emphasizing the importance of maintaining order and fair play in African football.
