The United Kingdom has announced a significant adjustment to its Skilled Worker visa program, increasing salary thresholds to prioritize highly skilled and well-compensated professionals. Effective January 1, 2025, the minimum salary for most applicants will rise from £26,200 to £38,700—an 82% increase.
This change, part of the government’s broader immigration reform, affects critical industries such as healthcare, technology, and engineering. Applicants with a relevant PhD will face new salary requirements of £34,830, while those in STEM fields must meet a threshold of £30,960, up from £20,960. Additionally, salaries for jobs on the shortage occupation list will also increase to £30,960.
The UK government has removed the 20% salary discount for shortage occupation roles, making it more challenging for workers to qualify without higher-paying job offers. However, recent graduates and new workforce entrants will still benefit from discounts.
This policy revision is expected to tighten eligibility for Skilled Worker visas, ensuring that only the most qualified professionals enter the UK job market. While it poses challenges for job seekers, it also offers opportunities for those in high-demand sectors. Employers will need to adjust their budgets to accommodate these changes, potentially leading to a more skilled workforce in the UK.
