The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to take decisive action by requesting the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to publish his asset declaration. The organization also urged him to encourage Vice President Kashim Shettima, ministers, National Assembly leaders, governors, and local government chairpersons to follow suit.

This appeal follows President Tinubu’s remarks during his first Presidential Media Chat last Monday, where he reportedly stated his willingness to consider asking the CCB to release details of his assets.

In a letter dated December 28, 2024, signed by SERAP Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, the group described Tinubu’s statement as a “significant development” but emphasized the need for immediate action to reinforce transparency and accountability in governance.

“Secrecy in asset declarations facilitates corruption at all levels of government,” SERAP argued, adding that publishing assets would strengthen public trust and reduce the misuse of public funds.

The organization also highlighted the importance of enforcing the Supreme Court’s July 11, 2024, judgment, which prohibits governors from taking control of local government funds. It noted that several state governors continue to disregard this ruling, undermining public confidence in the judiciary and rule of law.

SERAP stressed that transparency in asset declarations, as mandated by the Nigerian Constitution, is crucial for combating corruption and ensuring good governance. The group further called on Tinubu to lead by example by pushing for compliance among public officials.

“Your willingness to promote transparency should include implementing the Supreme Court judgment and holding state governors accountable for contempt of court,” SERAP stated.

This development comes amid growing public demand for openness in governance and adherence to legal frameworks aimed at curbing corruption in Nigeria.
