French authorities confirmed that three migrants tragically lost their lives while attempting to cross the English Channel on Sunday morning. Rescuers retrieved the victims from the water, while 45 others received medical care on the shore. Among them, seven required intensive care, and four were hospitalized due to hypothermia.

This incident adds to a grim year for Channel crossings, marked by the highest number of fatalities recorded to date. French MP Pierre-Henri Dumont emphasized the dangers of such crossings, particularly in winter, where low temperatures make survival in the water nearly impossible.

The French coastguard stated that search efforts are ongoing for additional survivors. Over 36,000 people have crossed the Channel in small boats this year, a stark increase from 2023’s 29,437. According to the International Organization for Migration, 77 individuals have died attempting the journey in 2024.

Border security minister Dame Angela Eagle blamed smugglers for the tragedy, stating, “Ruthless criminals running the small boat trade are overloading people into unseaworthy vessels.” The UK government is collaborating with French authorities to tackle these human trafficking networks.

Despite rescue operations, the Channel remains a perilous route for migrants seeking refuge, with adverse conditions intensifying the risks.
