The Garun Mallam Local Government Area in Kano State, Nigeria, has closed the Kwanar Gafan Tomato Market, citing its transformation into a hub for immoral activities, including prostitution, adultery, and homosexuality. This decision comes after reports that both youths and married women were engaging in illicit behavior within the market premises.

Aminu Kadawa, the Chairman of the local council, confirmed the closure, stating that the market had become a center of illegal activities, which deviated from its original purpose. He added that all market occupants were given a seven-day notice to vacate, warning that failure to comply would result in legal action. Kadawa emphasized the need to restore order and promised that the reopening date would be communicated once the situation was under control.

Aisha Saji, the Commissioner for Tourism and Management, supported the decision. Saji, who had previously led a raid at the market during her tenure as Commissioner for Women Affairs, recalled the arrest of 43 individuals—34 females and 9 males—who were apprehended for prostitution and illegal alcohol sales. She revealed that 14 of those arrested tested HIV-positive, with some unaware of their status. Saji also noted that the suspects hailed from various states, including Adamawa, Anambra, and Bauchi.

Saji had earlier recommended the demolition of the market, proposing the construction of a skills acquisition center to combat unemployment. She argued that such a facility would not only curb immorality but also provide youths with sustainable livelihoods.
