The bald eagle, a longstanding symbol of American power and resilience, has officially been recognized as the national bird of the United States. President Joe Biden signed legislation on Tuesday to amend the U.S. Code, solidifying the bald eagle’s place in the nation’s history and identity.

This recognition comes more than 240 years after the majestic bird first appeared on the Great Seal of the United States in 1782, featuring its iconic white head, yellow beak, and brown body. While Congress had previously designated the bald eagle as the national emblem that same year, no formal law ever confirmed its status as the national bird — until now.

The Great Seal, which includes an eagle holding an olive branch and arrows, along with the motto “E Pluribus Unum,” has long been a hallmark of official U.S. documents, military insignia, presidential flags, and even currency. Despite its ubiquitous presence, the bald eagle’s role as the national bird had simply been assumed, rather than legally established.

“This legislation honors a symbol of our nation’s strength and freedom,” President Biden said during the signing ceremony.

The bald eagle, native to North America, has been a revered emblem of the United States, embodying the ideals of independence and unity.
