Renowned Hollywood actor Denzel Washington has taken on a new role, becoming a licensed minister at the age of 69. Washington was baptized and licensed at the Kelly Temple in New York City, a church he attended during his childhood. This significant milestone reflects his deep commitment to faith and service.
Archbishop Christopher Bryant, who officiated the ceremonies, shared on social media:
“We celebrate the addition of Minister Denzel Washington into the clergy… His baptism and licensing to preach are the culmination of a life of faith.”
Bryant noted that Washington’s spiritual journey has been longstanding, recalling a transformative experience in the 1980s when Washington testified to being filled with the Holy Spirit after attending church with fellow actor Robert Townsend.
In his recent Esquire piece, Washington candidly expressed the challenges of discussing religion in Hollywood:
“You can’t talk like that and win Oscars… It’s not fashionable or sexy. But that doesn’t mean people in Hollywood don’t believe.”
Despite these challenges, Washington remains unshaken in his faith:
“I’m free now. When you see me, you see the best I could do with what I’ve been given by my Lord and Savior.”
Known for iconic roles in films such as Training Day, Malcolm X, and The Book of Eli, Washington’s decision to step into ministry marks a profound new chapter in his life, one rooted in service and spiritual dedication.
