The Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA) has condemned the alleged murder of 37-year-old Nigerian, Mr. Julius Chukwunta, by four South African men in Midrand, Johannesburg. The incident occurred on December 7, 2024, as Chukwunta was driving to his residence in the Midrand Protea Estate.

NICASA President-General, Dr. Frank Onyekwelu, revealed that Chukwunta was blocked by four men near his residence. When he attempted to seek assistance at the estate’s security office, the attackers allegedly assaulted him, inflicting a severe head injury.

“His female companion, who was with him in the car, rushed to the security office and found him bleeding on the ground,” Onyekwelu recounted. “Despite her calls for help, the security personnel and residents reportedly refused to assist or contact emergency services.”

According to NICASA, Chukwunta’s companion ultimately reached out to her father, who, along with other family members, transported the victim to Tembisa General Hospital. He was placed on life support but tragically died on December 10, 2024.

The case was reported to the Midrand Police Station, where the suspects, aged 20, 24, 27, and 28, were arrested and charged with murder. During a court hearing at the Alexandra Magistrate Court on December 13, 2024, three of the suspects were granted bail of R10,000 each, while the fourth suspect has yet to apply for bail. The next court session is scheduled for February 3, 2025.

Dr. Onyekwelu expressed disappointment over the bail granted to the suspects and vowed that the Nigerian community in South Africa would continue to demand justice for Chukwunta.

“We will not rest until justice is served, and the value of Nigerian lives is upheld in South Africa,” Onyekwelu stated.

The Nigerian community has raised concerns about the treatment of Nigerians in South Africa, emphasizing the need for swift and fair action against acts of violence and discrimination.
