
Prominent Ibadan-based broadcaster, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, has been hospitalized following the stampede at a children’s funfair that claimed the lives of 35 children at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.
Hamzat, who runs Agidigbo FM, reportedly collapsed after hearing about the tragic incident. Sources confirmed that his radio station had been used to promote the event.
A close associate disclosed to newsmen that Hamzat was rushed to an undisclosed hospital, where he remains unconscious. “The chairman of Agidigbo FM, Ibadan, is currently unconscious in an undisclosed hospital. He could not handle the shock,” the source said.
The stampede, which has sparked widespread grief and calls for accountability, is under investigation by the Oyo State Police Command. The incident has also led to the arrest of eight individuals, including Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ile-Ife, who organized the event.
Authorities have assured the public of justice and expressed condolences to the families of the victims. Meanwhile, Hamzat’s condition continues to draw concern from his colleagues and well-wishers in the media industry.
