The House of Representatives in Nigeria has raised N704.9 million through the monthly contribution of 50% of members’ basic salaries, with the funds earmarked to support vulnerable Nigerians.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced the total amount during plenary on Thursday, December 19, stating that the initiative was launched five months ago to address the critical needs of citizens.
“About five months ago, we decided to contribute half of our salaries to address the critical needs of the Nigerian people. I am happy to inform you that so far, we have contributed N704,907,578.82,” Abbas said.
The Speaker disclosed that the funds will be handed over to President Bola Tinubu on December 31 for distribution to Nigerians facing severe economic hardships. He emphasized that the initiative reflects the lawmakers’ commitment to alleviating poverty and addressing pressing societal issues.
“On December 31, I will lead a delegation of leadership to hand over the money to the President for the exclusive use of vulnerable Nigerians who really need it,” Abbas added.
