The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has commenced monitoring operations in response to an oil spill at Shell Petroleum Development Company’s (SPDC) loading terminal in Bonny, Rivers State.
The spill, caused by a ruptured pipeline, prompted SPDC to shut down the affected line to prevent further leakage. Containment booms have been deployed to limit the spread of the oil and protect nearby communities from environmental damage.
Despite these efforts, the spill has already reached the shoreline, raising concerns about its potential impact on marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of residents in the area.
In response, NIMASA has activated its emergency operations center to oversee the situation and coordinate a comprehensive response. The agency is collaborating with SPDC and other stakeholders to assess the scale of the spill and determine necessary remedial actions.
NIMASA assured the public of its commitment to minimizing the environmental and social consequences of the incident and restoring the affected areas.
