The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, declared the seat of Governor Monday Okpebholo, who represented the Edo Central Senatorial District, vacant. This followed his election and inauguration as the Governor of Edo State last month.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement after a valedictory session held in Okpebholo’s honor. Akpabio commended the former senator for his service and urged him to uphold his legacy of good governance in his role as governor.

The Senate has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize a bye-election to fill the vacant senatorial seat.

Okpebholo’s transition to governorship has already seen him presenting a N605 billion 2025 budget to the Edo State Assembly and making strides in governance.
