An early-morning fire on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, destroyed goods valued at millions of naira at the popular Alaba Rago market in the Ojo area of Lagos State.
According to a statement by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osayintolu, the fire broke out at midnight.
The immediate or underlying cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
Upon receiving distress calls, LASEMA activated the state’s emergency response plans and dispatched its Emergency Response Team from Igando to the scene. On arrival, the team found several shanty shops engulfed in flames.
Personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, alongside LASEMA and other responders, worked tirelessly to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjacent properties.
Dr. Oke-Osayintolu and the Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that the situation had been brought under control.
