Google has released its annual “Year in Search” report for 2024, revealing the top trending searches in Nigeria. Leading the list were the U.S. elections, Nigeria’s reinstated national anthem, and the persistent issues surrounding the national grid.

The report showcases Nigerians’ significant interest in global and local events, with U.S. elections taking the top spot, followed by President Bola Tinubu’s reinstatement of Nigeria’s pre-1978 national anthem and frequent national grid collapses, which occurred more than 10 times this year.

Among trending personalities, Bobrisky dominated searches, reflecting the public’s fascination with prominent figures. In entertainment, Boy Spyce’s I Don’t Care, Ayra Starr’s Commas, and Ozeba emerged as the top songs. The most-searched movies included A Tribe Called Judah and Treasure in the Sky, while Supacell and My Demon led TV series inquiries.

Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google West Africa’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager, commented:
“The 2024 Year in Search offers a unique lens into the questions, interests, and conversations that shaped the lives of Nigerians. From cultural milestones to pressing concerns, these insights show how Search continues to be a valuable tool for understanding the world.”

Practical queries like “How much is a dollar to naira today?” and “How to get perfectly defined curls for African hair?” also ranked high. Nigerians frequently searched for word definitions such as “demure” and “steeze,” highlighting diverse interests.
