Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has successfully undergone surgery in São Paulo to address a brain hemorrhage caused by a fall at his home in late October, according to a government-released medical statement on Tuesday.

The 79-year-old leader is recovering well in the intensive care unit of the Sirio-Libanês Hospital, where he was transferred after an MRI scan in Brasília detected the intracranial bleed late Monday. The scan was prompted by a headache Lula experienced.

Doctors reported that the operation went smoothly and plan to provide further details during a press conference scheduled for 9 a.m. local time (1200 GMT).

The fall, which occurred in October, caused trauma to the back of Lula’s head, requiring stitches and initial monitoring. While early tests in November showed his condition as stable, Lula continued an active schedule, including a trip to Montevideo for Mercosur trade discussions. However, the injury forced him to cancel his attendance at the BRICS summit in Russia due to medical advice against long-haul flights.

Brazil’s Labor Minister Luiz Marinho extended his wishes for a swift recovery on the social media platform X, reflecting widespread concern and support for the president’s health.
