German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is set to embark on a three-day official visit to Nigeria from December 10 to 12, 2024, according to a statement released by the German Embassy in Abuja on Monday.
During his stay, President Steinmeier will hold high-level discussions with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and the President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Dr. Alieu Touray. The talks in Abuja are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing regional issues.
The German leader will also travel to Lagos, where he plans to meet with business leaders, explore a start-up hub, and engage with notable figures from Nigeria’s cultural and civil society sectors, including artist Dr. Nike Okundaye, founder of Nike Art Gallery, and Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka.
A key highlight of the Lagos visit is a city tour aimed at understanding the challenges and opportunities of urban development in one of Africa’s largest megacities. The President will explore environmental and social issues while fostering partnerships to address these challenges.
“President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will arrive in Nigeria on December 10 and remain until December 12,” the embassy statement read. “He will meet with President Tinubu, ECOWAS leadership, and engage with Nigerian business, cultural, and civil society representatives to strengthen collaboration and deepen bilateral ties.”
The German President will be accompanied by a high-powered delegation of German business executives representing industries such as IT, energy, and high-tech. The delegation underscores the growing interest of German companies in investment opportunities in Nigeria.
