The self-proclaimed Prime Minister of Biafra, Simon Ekpa, is set to face terrorism-related charges in May 2025.

This date was confirmed by Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation, with Senior Detective Superintendent Mikko Laaksonen providing updates on the case.

Laaksonen disclosed, “Due to the ongoing investigation, no further details can be disclosed. The date for bringing up possible charges by the prosecution was set by the district court to May 2025.”

Re-Evaluation Possible
Ekpa and the Finnish authorities have the right to request a re-evaluation of his remand status after two weeks. Laaksonen clarified that in standard situations, the next hearing could occur two weeks after the previous one, should either party file for a review.

Arrest and Charges
Simon Ekpa was arrested last week alongside four others for alleged involvement in terror-related activities, including incitement to violence and financing terrorism. The Päijät-Häme District Court later remanded him in custody, citing charges of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.

The charges against Ekpa have drawn attention globally, given his role as a prominent figure in the Biafra secessionist movement. His actions, including broadcasting incendiary rhetoric online, have been linked to violent incidents in parts of southeastern Nigeria.

Community Reactions
Ekpa’s arrest and trial have stirred mixed reactions. While some hail it as a step toward curbing violent activities attributed to his leadership, his supporters view the developments as political persecution.

The Finnish authorities have emphasized their commitment to ensuring a fair trial while maintaining public safety and order. As the trial date approaches, it remains to be seen how these proceedings will impact the broader dynamics of the Biafra movement.
