In a lawsuit filed at the National Industrial Court in Abuja, 4,449 police officers have accused the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olukayode Egbetokun, of failing to implement their approved promotions. The officers assert that their promotions were sanctioned by the Police Service Commission (PSC) during its 19th plenary session, in line with the PSC Act.
Legal Basis
The claimants’ lawyer, Muka’ila Mavo, cited the PSC Act and Police Act provisions that delegate the authority for police appointments, promotions, and disciplinary actions to the PSC, excluding the IGP. He emphasized that the Supreme Court has affirmed the PSC’s authority over promotions within the police force.
Current Status
Justice R.B. Haastrup, presiding over the case, has adjourned the matter until December 18, 2024, for further hearing. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force’s counsel, ACP Isa Garba, has refrained from commenting publicly, stating that the Force Public Relations Officer is better suited to address the issue.
