As the harmattan season sets in across Nigeria and other parts of West Africa, experts are urging the public to take precautions to stay healthy and safe during this period characterized by dry, dusty winds and fluctuating temperatures. The harmattan, which typically lasts from November to March, poses several health risks, including respiratory problems, dehydration, and skin conditions.

To help people navigate the challenges of the season, health professionals and environmental experts have provided practical tips to protect against harmattan’s harsh effects:

  1. Stay hydrated
    The dry and dusty air can cause dehydration and dry throat. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps keep the body hydrated and supports healthy respiratory function. Herbal teas and warm liquids can also help soothe irritated throats.
  2. Protect your skin
    The harmattan’s dry weather often leads to cracked and flaky skin. Using moisturizers, petroleum jelly, or shea butter can help keep the skin hydrated. Wearing protective clothing, such as long sleeves and hats, can also prevent direct exposure to harsh winds.
  3. Avoid dust exposure
    Dust particles carried by harmattan winds can trigger respiratory issues, particularly for individuals with asthma or other lung conditions. Wearing face masks or covering the nose and mouth with a handkerchief is advised, especially outdoors or in dusty areas.
  4. Maintain good eye care
    Dusty winds can irritate the eyes, causing redness and discomfort. Using protective glasses or sunglasses when outdoors can shield the eyes. Eye drops can also be used to alleviate dryness, but it is recommended to consult a healthcare provider before use.

    Harmattan dust easily settles on surfaces, leading to increased respiratory issues. Regular cleaning of homes, workspaces, and ventilation systems can help minimize exposure to harmful particles.
