Grief enveloped Nnewi on Friday, November 22, 2024, as Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South in the National Assembly, was laid to rest in his hometown of Umuanuka, Otolo Nnewi, Anambra State. The late senator’s burial drew a massive crowd, including political figures, admirers, and those who relied on his philanthropy.

The senator’s remains were first received at his country home before being taken to St. Peter Clever Parish, Umuanuka, for a funeral Mass officiated by the Bishop of Ekwulobia Diocese, Rt. Rev. Peter Cardinal Ebere Okpaleke. In his homily, Cardinal Okpaleke praised Ubah’s life of service, urging those present to emulate his legacy of philanthropy and humanity.

Ubah passed away in July 2024 while attending his daughter’s graduation in the United Kingdom. Known for his generosity, Ubah supported many indigent people in Nnewi and across Anambra State. His businesses also provided jobs that sustained countless families, further solidifying his impact on the community.

As his remains arrived at his palatial compound, a crowd of mourners, many of whom had benefited from his kindness, broke into tears. His political associates and mentees also expressed sorrow as they bid farewell to the man they admired.

Among the dignitaries at the funeral were Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo; former governor, Mr. Peter Obi; former senator, Mrs. Uche Ekwunife; and many other prominent figures. Soludo recalled his last conversation with Ubah in May, expressing shock at his sudden passing.

Uche Ekwunife described Ubah as a “rare gem” who embodied leadership and compassion. She highlighted his dedication to youth development and his efforts to prioritize the collective good over personal gain.

The burial ceremony was conducted under tight security following threats from separatist elements who had vowed to disrupt the proceedings. Despite these threats, the event was peaceful, with personnel from the military, police, and local vigilante groups ensuring safety.

Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s legacy of philanthropy and service remains etched in the hearts of those he touched, as Nnewi and Nigeria at large mourn the loss of a true humanitarian.
