The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the elimination of 115 terrorists, including a notorious commander, Munzur Ya Audu, during recent military operations across the country. In the same operations, 238 terrorists were arrested, 138 hostages rescued, and several weapons recovered.
Speaking during a press briefing on Thursday, November 21, 2024, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, disclosed the extent of the successes achieved by troops in the fight against terrorism. “We are actively collecting intelligence, hunting terrorists, and striking locations confirmed to be their hideouts,” he said.
General Buba explained that the operations are part of a broader effort to dismantle terrorist logistics and neutralize their networks. “We are at war against a cruel and vicious enemy. It is, therefore, imperative that we degrade their military capability and effectiveness.”
The operations also led to the recovery of 145 assorted weapons, including AK-47 rifles, pump-action guns, and grenades. Troops seized 3,825 rounds of ammunition and other items such as vehicles, motorcycles, and mobile phones.
In addition, N7.2 million in cash was recovered during the week, alongside the destruction of terrorist structures and hideouts.
In the Niger Delta region, troops intensified their crackdown on illegal refining activities. The operations resulted in the destruction of 56 illegal refining sites, 78 crude oil ovens, and 26 storage tanks. Recovered items included 872,070 liters of stolen crude oil valued at over ₦921 million.
“We are making serious efforts to dismantle the capabilities of terrorists and their collaborators, as well as to eliminate the networks aiding oil theft,” General Buba stated.
While highlighting the successes, General Buba acknowledged that eight soldiers lost their lives during the operations, five in the North-East and three in the South-East. “Their sacrifice will not be in vain as we continue to protect our nation and its people,” he added.
Continued Commitment
The military reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring peace and stability across Nigeria. “Our troops will remain relentless in their efforts to safeguard lives and dismantle all forms of criminal activity threatening the security of the nation,” Buba concluded.
