The Senate has removed Yakubu Danladi Umar as Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) following allegations of misconduct, including corruption and public altercations. This decision was reached through a resolution backed by 74 senators, surpassing the two-thirds majority required under Section 157 (1) of the 1999 Constitution.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to formalize the Senate’s decision, aligning with constitutional provisions.
The move comes after President Tinubu appointed Abdullahi Usman Bello as Umar’s replacement due to “overwhelming allegations” against him. These include corruption cases investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), as well as a widely publicized altercation between Umar and a security officer in Abuja.
Despite the appointment of a successor, Umar reportedly refused to relinquish his position, prompting legislative intervention.
