A deadly attack by Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists has left five Nigerian soldiers dead and several others wounded in Borno State.

The assault took place in the Gubio Local Government Area (LGA) as troops were engaged in stabilisation efforts.

According to a statement from the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, the attack resulted in the death of five soldiers, with ten others injured and four soldiers declared missing.

The attack also led to significant destruction, including the loss of military equipment such as one gun truck, three TCVs, and an excavator.

Despite the casualties, the Nigerian military successfully repelled the attackers, eliminating more than 30 terrorists in subsequent engagements. Reinforcements, supported by airstrikes, were sent to pursue the remaining insurgents.

A military source revealed that the insurgents had launched multiple attacks in an attempt to overrun a special military force stationed at the Kareto community in Gubio LGA.

This assault is part of an ongoing escalation of violence in the Lake Chad region, which has seen frequent insurgent attacks despite efforts by the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to quell the violence.

Earlier this year, on August 16, a similar attack killed 18 soldiers and left several others injured, while six insurgents were neutralized. The military had been preparing for the return of displaced villagers when the attack occurred.

In a show of support, the Borno State Government extended condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and the Nigerian military.

The state government described the attack as a painful reminder of Boko Haram’s cruelty, reaffirming its solidarity with the armed forces in the ongoing fight against insurgency.

The loss of soldiers in this latest attack underscores the continued dangers faced by military personnel in the region as they work to stabilize and protect communities affected by the insurgency.
