Air cargo demand in Africa and Asia surged by 25.8% in April 2024, significantly outperforming counterparts in North America and the Middle East, according to the latest report from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The IATA report revealed that overall air cargo demand increased by 10.6% in April 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. African airlines experienced a remarkable year-on-year demand growth of 25.8%, with the Africa-Asia market driving much of this increase.

The report highlighted the performance in other regions, stating, “North America and the Middle East stood at 7% and 9.4% respectively, while Asia-Pacific, Europe, and Latin America saw increases of 14%, 12.7%, and 11.7% respectively in airline cargo demand.”

Moreover, the report noted that the capacity for African airlines also rose significantly, with an 18.7% year-on-year increase in April.

The robust growth in air cargo demand reflects a recovery and expansion in global trade, particularly in the Africa-Asia corridor, demonstrating the regions’ vital roles in the global logistics network.
