Special Adviser to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on Public Communication and Orientation, Sunday Dare, has lashed out at former President Olusegun Obasanjo, accusing him of undermining Nigeria’s democracy during his administration.
Dare’s remarks followed Obasanjo’s recent call for the dismissal of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Mahmood Yakubu and a comprehensive reform of Nigeria’s electoral processes.
In a statement shared on his X account on Monday, Dare described Obasanjo as lacking the moral authority to critique the current administration, citing unresolved allegations of corruption and governance failures during his tenure.
“Former President Obasanjo is a man with a tremendous capacity for mischief, and Nigerians know it. His journey along the path of hallucinations has never been in doubt,” Dare wrote.
The adviser highlighted alleged lapses during Obasanjo’s presidency, including the controversial $16 billion spent on power generation projects and the failed third-term agenda.
“Democracy suffered mortal wounds under his watch, capped by his murderous rage for an ill-fated third term,” Dare added, noting that President Tinubu’s administration is focused on addressing the structural challenges left behind.
He concluded by urging Obasanjo to reflect on his legacy and offer an apology to Nigerians for his administration’s shortcomings, while affirming the government’s commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda.
