The Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Calistus Onaga, has voiced grave concern over the rising bloodshed in the South-East, particularly politically motivated killings.
Speaking at a thanksgiving mass for the empowerment program of Enugu East Senator, Sir Kelvin Chukwu, at the Holy Ghost Cathedral in Enugu, Bishop Onaga condemned the violence and warned that those responsible for such acts would face divine retribution.
The bishop specifically referenced the brutal murder of Labour Party senatorial candidate, Oyibo Chukwu, during the 2023 elections, which paved the way for his younger brother, Senator Kelvin Chukwu, to take office.
He also condemned the killing of Ogbete Market Traders Association Chairman, Stephen Aniagu, among other violent acts.
In his sermon, based on Mark 13:24-32, Bishop Onaga urged Christians to embrace tolerance, forgiveness, and reconciliation.
He reminded the congregation of the uncertainty of life, urging them to live in accordance with God’s commandments and be prepared for the inevitable end of life.
At the continuation of the event at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC), Dr. Ben Nwoye, the Chairman of the occasion and former APC Enugu State Chairman, condemned the assassination of Oyibo Chukwu, describing it as a tragic event during the electioneering period. Nwoye emphasized the importance of promoting good governance, highlighting that his attendance was to support quality leadership regardless of political affiliation.
Senator Kelvin Chukwu, in his speech, thanked members of the National Assembly for their solidarity and assured his constituents of his commitment to quality representation. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Senators Victor Umeh, Okey Ezea, Osita Ngwu, and Rt. Rev. Daniel Olinya.
