Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been declared the winner of the 2024 Ondo State governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The announcement was made on Sunday in Akure, the state capital, by INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Akinwumi Olayemi Durotimi, who is also the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Lokoja.
Aiyedatiwa secured a total of 366,781 votes to defeat his closest rival, Ajayi Agboola of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 117,845 votes. The Labour Party (LP) candidate, Olorunfemi Festus, garnered 1,162 votes, while Abbas Mimiko of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) also fell short.
“Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of lawful votes cast, is hereby returned elected,” Prof. Durotimi declared.
The incumbent governor faced stiff competition from notable candidates but ultimately retained his position after gaining significant support across the state. Aiyedatiwa, who hails from Ilaje Local Government Area in the southern senatorial district, succeeded the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on December 27, 2023.
The election results highlight the APC’s continued dominance in Ondo State, with Aiyedatiwa pledging to build on his administration’s achievements in the coming term.
