The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reported significant progress in the collation of results from the Ondo State governorship election, with 93.52% of polling unit results uploaded to its Result Viewing Portal as of 7:38 pm on Saturday.
According to INEC, results from 3,684 out of the 3,933 polling units in the state have been made available online, providing a glimpse into the fiercely contested election.
Eighteen political parties participated in the race, but the spotlight remains on incumbent governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former deputy governor Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Both contenders share a political history as deputy governors under the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s administration. Aiyedatiwa assumed office as governor following Akeredolu’s passing last year, while Ajayi remains a seasoned figure in the state’s politics.
The election, widely regarded as peaceful, concluded voting in some areas by 2:30 pm, allowing for sorting and counting of votes to commence.
Observers have noted the smooth conduct of the poll, with early preparation by INEC officials contributing to the efficiency of the process. However, as the collation of results continues, the people of Ondo await a definitive outcome to determine the state’s next leader.
