The Court of Appeal in Abuja has affirmed Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa as the legally recognized President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). This ruling upheld an earlier decision by the National Industrial Court on March 11, 2024, in Suit No. NICN/ABJ/263/2023, which declared Baruwa as the legitimate leader of the union.
Delivering judgment, the three-member panel of Justices, comprising Hamma Akawu Barka, Nnamdi Dimgba, and Asmau Ojuolape Akanbi, dismissed an appeal filed by Alhaji Najeem Usman Yasin, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, and others challenging Baruwa’s presidency. The court held that the appeal lacked merit and consequently awarded a cost of ₦100,000 against the appellants, who are aligned with the faction loyal to MC Oluomo.
Baruwa Condemns Oluomo’s Inauguration
Speaking at a press conference following the ruling, Baruwa described MC Oluomo’s recent inauguration as “an affront on the judiciary”, stating it violated the judgments of both the National Industrial Court and the Court of Appeal.
“It is laughable and a direct violation of the March 11 and November 8 judgments, which restrained the Yasin-led faction from interfering in the activities and administration of the Baruwa-led National Executives of NURTW,” he said.
Baruwa emphasized that the NURTW is a lawful entity governed by a constitution, which outlines procedures for elections into leadership positions. He urged the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General of the Federation to enforce the Appeal Court judgment to maintain peace, order, and respect for the rule of law.
Call for Unity and Adherence to Law
The appellate court’s decision has further solidified Baruwa’s leadership in a union that has been plagued by internal conflict. Baruwa reiterated his commitment to leading the NURTW in line with its constitutional provisions and called on all stakeholders to respect the court’s verdict for the sake of peace within the union.
