The World Trade Organization (WTO) has scheduled a special meeting of its General Council to determine the appointment of its next Director-General, following the close of the nomination period on November 8. Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the incumbent Director-General, was the only candidate who expressed interest in continuing in the role.
The council meeting, set for November 28-29, will allow WTO members to hear a presentation from Dr. Okonjo-Iweala on her vision for the organization, followed by a question-and-answer session. This will be followed by discussions among council members to decide on her reappointment.
Okonjo-Iweala’s current term is set to end on August 31, 2025, and her continued leadership could further shape the organization’s agenda in addressing global trade challenges.
