Baltasar Engonga, the former Director-General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), has been remanded in Malabo’s Black Beach Prison following his dismissal in a scandal involving financial misconduct and an extensive sex tape controversy.

The scandal erupted amid a fraud investigation that led authorities to uncover approximately 400 sex tapes involving Engonga and prominent women in Equatorial Guinea. These tapes, found in his home and office, sparked a national outcry and ultimately led President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo to remove Engonga from office on November 6, 2024.

According to Decree No. 118/2024, the president cited Engonga’s “irregularities committed in the exercise of his functions, as well as inappropriate family and social conduct” as grounds for his dismissal. A report from the French blog Afrikmatin confirmed that Engonga was subsequently chained and transferred to Malabo Central Prison, facing charges of corruption and embezzlement.
