A Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, has publicly apologized to Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives for Aba North/South in Abia State, following an altercation during a package delivery. In a video statement released on Thursday, Abuwatseya expressed regret for any actions or words that may have provoked the lawmaker.
Abuwatseya emphasized unity, urging Nigerians to move beyond the incident and not let it fuel divisions based on religion, tribe, or region. He thanked his family and supporters, saying, “Let’s forgive and forget, as it’s even contained in our Lord’s Prayer.”
The incident, which occurred on October 28, involved Ikwechegh allegedly slapping and insulting the driver after being asked to come outside to collect a package. In a viral video, the visibly upset Ikwechegh is seen repeatedly assaulting Abuwatseya. Following public backlash, Ikwechegh issued a formal apology to the driver, the Nigerian Police Force, and the National Assembly, acknowledging that his behavior did not align with the responsibilities of a public official.
The two parties later resolved the issue through alternative dispute resolution, reaching what Ikwechegh described as a “mutual and respectful agreement.”
