A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered Godwins Omobayo, the current Deputy Governor of Edo, to appear in court on November 26, 2024, due to his alleged refusal to comply with a prior court judgment. Justice James Omotosho made the ruling during a court session on November 4, emphasizing the importance of a fair hearing for Omobayo, who is accused of contempt.
The contempt charge was filed by Philip Shaibu, the reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo, who was impeached earlier this year. Justice Omotosho had ruled on July 17 that Shaibu’s impeachment by the Edo House of Assembly was unlawful, ordering his reinstatement on the grounds that the Assembly did not follow due process.
Omobayo had been sworn in as deputy governor after Shaibu’s impeachment on April 8, 2024. Following the court’s decision, Shaibu filed for Omobayo to be held in contempt for failing to vacate the position despite the court ruling.
During the hearing, Shaibu’s lawyer, Ayotunde Ogunleye, noted that Omobayo had been served with a notice but had not complied. Justice Omotosho granted a motion for substituted service and adjourned the matter, mandating Omobayo’s presence at the next hearing.
The court’s decision highlights the ongoing political tensions within Edo state as the current government’s tenure is set to conclude on November 12, 2024.
