On Tuesday evening, U.S. President Joe Biden expressed gratitude to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu for the release of Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan.

This acknowledgment came during a 30-minute call, where Biden highlighted Nigeria’s collaboration in resolving the issue. Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar informed reporters about the call, noting Biden’s appreciation for the partnership between the U.S. and Nigeria.

Gambaryan, who was detained for alleged money laundering in early 2024 amid Nigeria’s cryptocurrency crackdown, departed Nigeria on Monday following eight months in custody. His prolonged detention raised concerns among U.S. diplomats and lawmakers, especially given reports of his deteriorating health. While charges against him were ultimately dismissed by an Abuja Federal High Court, international advocacy helped secure his release.

President Tinubu welcomed Biden’s appreciation, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and strengthening security ties in West Africa. Biden, in turn, underscored the importance of Africa’s role on the global stage, committing U.S. support for securing two permanent African seats on the U.N. Security Council, including one for Nigeria. Both leaders agreed on the need for ongoing collaboration in governance and law, with plans to maintain close communication.
