The Ogun State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Obada Grammar School in Idi-Emi, Obada, following the death of Monday Arijo, a senior secondary school student allegedly subjected to corporal punishment. This decision comes after the arrest and suspension of the teacher involved in the incident, as well as the suspension of the school’s principal, Tamrat Onaolapo, who reportedly allowed corporal punishment despite state regulations against it.
Governor Dapo Abiodun directed the closure of the school and called for a full investigation into the circumstances leading to Arijo’s death. “Those found responsible by the investigation’s outcome will face the full weight of the law,” stated Governor Abiodun.
In addition to closing the school, representatives from the Ogun State Ministry of Education, including officials from the Secondary and Higher Education Department, ANCOPPS, and other educational bodies, visited Arijo’s family to offer condolences and gather firsthand information for the investigation. The delegation expressed sympathy to the family, with one official stating, “The state government is committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring accountability.”
During the visit, the family was given a condolence letter and a cash gift of N500,000 as a token of support in this challenging time.
