The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has responded to the viral incident involving Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh, a House of Representatives member from Abia State, who allegedly assaulted Uber driver Stephen Abuwatseya.

The altercation, which took place on October 27, 2024, in Maitama, Abuja, has sparked widespread criticism following video footage shared on X by Chidi Odinkalu, former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission.

In the video, Ikwechegh is seen threatening the cab driver, stating he would “make him disappear” and warning that he could “beat him up” and “lock him in his generator house.”

Responding on its official X handle, the NPF acknowledged awareness of the incident, noting that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command is currently investigating based on Abuwatseya’s report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters. The NPF also cautioned against the misuse of the Inspector-General of Police’s name or office to intimidate others, saying, “Such actions undermine the values of impartiality that the IGP’s office upholds.”

As the investigation unfolds, calls for accountability are increasing, with many urging authorities to take appropriate action against the lawmaker if the allegations are confirmed.
