A naval seaman in Zamfara State, Nigeria, has reportedly shot and killed a fellow naval officer after an argument early on Friday morning. The incident, confirmed by the Defence Headquarters, occurred at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Dansadau, in the Maru Local Government Area, where the two personnel were stationed as part of Operation Sheto Yanma.

The incident involved Leading Seaman (LS) Akila, who allegedly fired his service rifle at his colleague during a dispute at approximately 3:12 am on October 25. Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, explained that LS Akila was swiftly detained following the incident. Authorities disarmed him and have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Following the investigation, the case will be presented to a military court martial, which will handle disciplinary proceedings. Meanwhile, Defence Headquarters has initiated the official notification process for the deceased’s family. Due to this, the victim’s name has not yet been released to the public.

Major General Buba also requested that the media handle the case sensitively to avoid causing further distress to the deceased’s family.
