Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has suspended the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Fidelis Mnyim.
The suspension followed Mnyim’s involvement in a legal case challenging the establishment of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
This case involves 19 states, including Benue, contesting the constitutionality of the EFCC’s establishment. These states argue that the EFCC Act, derived from the UN Convention against corruption, was not properly integrated into Nigerian law according to Section 12 of the Constitution. The Supreme Court has reserved judgment and will announce the ruling at a later date.
