The Lagos State government is set to commence prosecution related to the death of popular rapper and songwriter, Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, one year after his passing.
Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), made this announcement during a press briefing on Monday, ahead of the strategic stakeholders’ meeting marking his first year in office. Speaking at the event held at the Ministry’s conference room in Alausa, Pedro addressed the delay in the case, attributing it to the thorough investigation process.
Pedro explained, “On Mohbad’s case, I agree there has been a delay, and the delay is borne out of the time taken for investigation. Forensic analysis, toxicology—these are all part of the investigation. It is better to have a complete, full-proof investigation that can lead to a conviction than to rush to court with incomplete evidence.”
Pedro further revealed that the toxicology report from the United States has been received and is with the coroner. “However,” he added, “the family members of Mohbad have requested their independent forensic analysis, but that should not stop us now. The legal advice should be out this week, and those to be prosecuted will face charges based on available evidence.”
Mohbad’s death on September 12, 2023, initially reported as natural, sparked widespread skepticism. The official autopsy report led to public outcry, with many accusing authorities of mishandling the investigation. In response, the Lagos State government ordered a second autopsy to address concerns.
Pedro acknowledged that delays could have been avoided if not for the destruction of the Lagos Forensic Laboratory during the EndSARS protest. “Had the laboratory been intact, the case would have been concluded by now,” he stated.
The Lagos government has assured the public that justice will be served in Mohbad’s case.
The strategic stakeholders’ meeting, scheduled for October 23 and 24, 2024, will also focus on strengthening collaboration among law enforcement agencies to improve justice delivery in Lagos State. Key stakeholders, including the Nigerian Police, EFCC, ICPC, and the Nigerian Correctional Service, will be in attendance.
The meeting, themed “Enhancing Collaboration for Effective Justice Delivery,” is aimed at improving inter-agency coordination and ensuring that justice is accessible to all residents of Lagos State.
