Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed plans for a self-driving robotaxi, predicting that the vehicle will be available by 2027. The announcement came during an event in Los Angeles, where Musk described the electric car as having no steering wheel or pedals and priced under $30,000. According to Musk, the robotaxi will use inductive technology for wireless charging and will be “10 to 20 times safer” than human-driven cars.
“You can think of the car in an autonomous world as being like just a little lounge,” Musk said. “You’re just sitting in a comfortable little lounge, and when you get out, you will be at your destination.”
Musk added that Tesla plans to begin “fully autonomous, unsupervised” driving with existing models in Texas and California next year, before moving to production of the “cybercab.” While light on specific details, Musk expressed optimism, stating, “I tend to be a little optimistic with time frames, but in 2026, so yeah, before 2027. Let me put it that way.”
Robovan and Optimus Robot Unveiled
In addition to the robotaxi, Musk introduced the “Robovan,” a mass passenger vehicle designed without a steering wheel or driver, capable of seating up to 20 people or being used for cargo. He provided no timeline for its production.
Musk also showcased the Optimus humanoid robot, designed to handle menial tasks and offer companionship. He claimed it could retail for $20,000 to $30,000 but gave no timeline for its availability.
While Musk’s ambitious announcements have long captivated audiences, critics remain skeptical due to his history of missed deadlines. Tesla’s stock, however, is expected to rise as markets react to the announcements.
