Cameroon’s government has issued a ban on media discussions surrounding the health of President Paul Biya, Africa’s second-longest-serving leader, following rampant rumors that the 91-year-old is gravely ill.

In a directive dated October 9, 2024, signed by Territorial Administration Minister Paul Atanga Nji, the government declared that Biya’s health is a matter of national security. “The head of state is the principal institution of the republic, and discussions on his condition are a matter of national security,” the document stated.

The government emphasized that all discussions in the media regarding Biya’s condition are “officially banned,” and violators will “face the full force of the law.” The order instructed regional governors to establish “monitoring cells” to track media content, including on social networks.

Biya, who has been in power for over 41 years, has not made a public appearance since early September, sparking widespread speculation about his health. In response, the president’s office issued a statement, asserting that Biya is in “excellent health” and condemning the rumors as “disinformation.” A government spokesperson added that Biya is “working and attending to his affairs in Geneva” and would return to Cameroon “in the coming days.”

Biya’s appearances have become increasingly rare in recent years, with most limited to pre-recorded speeches and family photos with his influential wife, Chantal.
