United States President Joe Biden has stated he could have defeated Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election had he not withdrawn from the race. In an exclusive interview with USA Today, Biden expressed confidence in his ability to secure re-election but admitted concerns about his stamina for another term at the age of 82.

“So far, so good,” Biden remarked. “But who knows what I’m going to be when I’m 86 years old?”

Biden, who announced his withdrawal on July 21, noted that his exit opened the path for Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the Democratic ticket. Harris, however, lost to Trump, prompting criticism from prominent Democrats who argued that an earlier withdrawal might have allowed the party to better strategize.

During the interview, Biden revealed he is considering issuing pre-emptive pardons for figures like former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney and Dr. Anthony Fauci. He recounted discussing the matter with Trump post-election, emphasizing that settling political scores was unnecessary.

Biden also defended his controversial pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, who faced tax evasion and firearm charges. Despite pledging not to intervene, he maintained that the pardon was warranted.

Acknowledging criticism over his delayed exit from the race, Biden explained his decision was influenced by polling data and his concerns about governing effectively at an advanced age. “When Trump was running again, I really thought I had the best chance of beating him. But I also wasn’t looking to be president at 85 or 86 years old,” he admitted.

As Biden reflects on his decades-long political career, which began in 1972, the interview underscores his belief in the strength of his leadership and his legacy amidst growing scrutiny over his age and decisions.
