The Nigerian Armed Forces have deployed 197 personnel for a peacekeeping mission in The Gambia, despite ongoing security challenges within Nigeria, including banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping.
This deployment was announced by Major General Boniface Sinjen, Chief of Operations of the Nigerian Army, during the graduation of troops at the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre (MLAILPKC) in Jaji, Kaduna State, on Friday. The troops, part of Nigerian Company 9 for the Economic Community of West African States Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG), completed their Pre-Deployment Training (PDT) on May 4.
General Sinjen highlighted the importance of their mission, noting that it comes at a critical time for The Gambia, which is experiencing political instability. He emphasized that the training equipped the soldiers with the necessary tactical skills, knowledge, and values such as discipline, respect for human rights, and compassion for civilians, crucial for their role in maintaining peace and promoting stability in the region.
“You have learned the importance of teamwork, leadership, and cultural sensitivity, essential for your success in the mission area,” Sinjen stated. “Your mission is crucial in maintaining peace, protecting lives, and promoting sustainable development.”
He reminded the troops of their responsibility to uphold professionalism and adhere strictly to ECOWAS’ mandate, which guides their mission. He warned against any form of misconduct, including sexual exploitation and abuse, stressing that any violations would have severe consequences.
Major General Ademola Adedoja, Commandant of MLAILPKC, remarked that the six-week training was comprehensive and in line with United Nations standards. The training covered critical issues such as sexual exploitation, conduct and discipline, and the protection of civilians, preparing the troops for effective deployment.
“The training has ensured that these men are better informed and equipped to perform their roles effectively in The Gambia,” Adedoja said.
