Egyptian authorities have reported that at least 16 people are missing after a tourist yacht sank in the Red Sea on Monday. This tragedy occurred despite earlier warnings from the Egyptian Meteorological Authority about dangerous maritime conditions, including turbulence and high waves.

Red Sea Governor Amr Hanafy confirmed that 28 people were rescued from the vessel, which went down south of the coastal town of Marsa Alam. Among the rescued, some were airlifted to receive medical treatment.

The yacht carried a total of 44 people: 31 tourists of various nationalities and 13 Egyptians, including the crew. The United Kingdom’s Foreign Office stated that it is providing consular support to British nationals and their families affected by the incident. Reports indicate that British citizens may be among the missing.

Distress Call and Rescue Efforts

Officials received a distress call from the yacht, named Sea Story, just before dawn on Monday. The vessel had departed Marsa Alam for a planned five-day journey. Rescue operations are being coordinated by the Egyptian military in collaboration with local authorities.

The cause of the sinking remains unclear. However, the Egyptian Meteorological Authority had advised against maritime activities on Sunday and Monday due to rough conditions.

Vessel Details and Operator Response

The Sea Story, a four-deck, wooden-hulled motor yacht, was built in 2022 and could accommodate up to 36 passengers, according to the operator Dive Pro Liveaboard. When contacted by The Associated Press, a representative of the company declined to provide information and abruptly ended the call.

Impact on Tourism

Many tour operators have already reduced or suspended Red Sea trips due to increasing risks from regional conflicts. This incident adds to concerns about the safety of maritime tourism in the area.

Rescue teams continue to search for the missing passengers. Further updates are expected as the investigation into the cause of the sinking unfolds.
